Hair Drug Testing

Why A Hair Follicle?

The hair analysis covers an approximate 90-day time frame and is more effective in detecting long-term illegal drug use. It is most likely ordered when an employer desires a longer detection period than urine testing can provide. Employers who have a zero tolerance drug use policy are utilizing hair follicle drug test instead of the standard urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are also being used by courts and individuals on probation. Urine or blood tests are more appropriately used to detect recent use.

Hair Follicle Drug Test Process

The procedure used to perform a hair follicle test is very simple. The drug testing specialist will cut approximately 90 to 120 strands of hair at the scalp from the head. If the donor does not have head hair, then hair from legs, chest, or armpits can be used.  If the donor has no hair on the head or body the test cannot be performed. The collector secures the hair sample in foil, documentation is prepared for a send-off in front of the donor, and then the sample is shipped to the lab for testing.  Results are available within 1-4 business days from the day the sample is shipped.

Requirements

The desired length of head hair is 1.5 inches of hair. However, head hair that is shorter can still be utilized by obtaining a larger quantity of head hair OR a measurement by weight of body hair.  Head hair and body hair cannot be mixed nor tested together.

Testing Panel

The 5-panel hair test we use can detect cocaine, marijuana, opiates (codeine, morphine & 6-acetylmorphine,), amphetamines (amphetamine, methamphetamine, MDMA, MDA), and phencyclidine (PCP).  Along with the Extended Opiates panel of oxycodone, oxymorphone, hydrocodone, and hydromorphone.

  • How soon after use can a drug be detected in hair?
    It takes approximately 7-12 days from the time of drug use for the hair containing drug to grow above the scalp where it can be collected.
  • Does body hair give the same type of results as head hair?
    Body hair can be used for testing. However, while body hair is generally acknowledged as representing a more distant time frame than head hair, the approximate time period cannot be identified due to the high variability of growth rates.
  • Can external exposure to drugs (marijuana smoke, crack smoke, etc.) have an effect on the hair test results? "
    The testing laboratory looks for both the parent drug and metabolite (bi-product) of drug usage (where appropriate). For marijuana analysis, the lab detects only the metabolite (THC-COOH). This metabolite is only produced by the body and cannot be an environmental contaminant.
  • Does hair color effect results?
    Hair color is determined by the amount of melanin in the hair. It has been shown experimentally, through actual hair samples, as well as determined in court that hair color has no significant impact on results.
